Jeremy Dyer is in his second year of the program. He is also a Graduate Research Assistant at the Urban Design Studio. He holds a Master's of Arts in Teaching from Spalding University and a Bachelor's in History from the University of Louisville. The topic that intrigues him most is how urban design can encourage livable and sustainable communities. When not in class he enjoys spending time with his family and playing basketball. Michael earned his BA degree in Geography from Florida Atlantic University and is currently pursuing a Master of Urban Planning degree from U of L. He became interested in community planning while living in and traveling to many cities in the U.S., Europe and Central America. As a transportation planner with the Lincoln Trail Area Development District, he has learned the importance of addressing community issues with a regional perspective, while maintaining a focus on helping individual people. Academically, his interests are centered on regional infrastructure systems (specifically transportation, energy, and the environment) and community redevelopment. Apart from work and school, Michael loves playing basketball, cooking, and chasing around his 18-month old daughter. |
Brian received his B.S. and M.S. in Zoology with a focus in fisheries at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. His thesis research revealed fish and amphibian species distribution patterns as a function of species interactions and landscape characteristics across multiple spatial scales. He moved to Louisville in 2003 from Chicago to work as an Aquatic Biologist for Redwing Ecological Services. His specialization includes stream assessments and restoration, watershed planning/management, and GIS. Brian entered the MUP program with the desire to gain insight into how land use planning could be utilized to help restore the ecological integrity of natural areas in urban environments. For example, he is interested in using urban planning techniques for promoting the use of a green infrastructure approach for stormwater management practices. |
Sarah is in her second year of the Masters of Urban Planning and Masters of Public Administration dual degree. She is primarily interested in environmental planning, as well non-profit management. She received a double-major from the University of Kentucky in English and Psychology. She is currently working with the Center for Nonprofit Excellence. In her spare time she enjoys being outside, traveling, playing board games, going to museums and art galleries and enjoying the many concerts and activities that Louisville has to offer. |
Alex received his BA in Art from the University of Louisville in 2002, and is currently pursuing his Master's in Urban Planning. During his six-year hiatus from academia, he came to the conclusion that working in the field of urban planning would help to fulfill his passion for helping those in need while engaging in pleasing visual stimulation within the environment in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner. The last couple of years have been busy for Alex: he was recently married, spent time in Uganda with a humanitarian team he co-founded, completed an album with his band of ten years, Bloom Street, and, of course, started on his career path. He currently works at Whole Foods Market, and hopes to work in countries that need the most help or have been struck by disaster. He also would like to pursue architectural/community design after the program. Oh, and he's the Treasurer of the Planning Student Organization! |

Courtney is in her second year of the MUP program specializing in Housing and Community Development and Non-profit Management. She received a BA in Interior Design in 2003 but after practicing for a few years decided on a career change. Living abroad in Istanbul, Turkey for several years opened her eyes to the great need of urban planning in developing countries. Upon returning to the U.S. she completed a Bachelor's degree in History with a focus on the social sciences and Middle Eastern Studies. Her new career path chosen, Courtney dedicates the majority of her time to working at the Louisville Downtown Management District as the Research Assistant while pursueing her masters as a full-time student. An active member of the Yound Non-Profit Professionals Network of Louisville, she also is the Planning Student Organization Secretary, and a Development Committee member of The Louisville Creative Centre, a local non-profit art school. In her very limited free-time she enjoys the outdoors, supporting the local art scene, traveling to see friends and family throughout the world, and supporting her favorite futbol team- Fenerbahche! |
Amy Fox received a BS in Applied Psychology and a minor in Economics from Arizona State University, moving to Louisville to complete a Master's in Urban Planning at the University of Louisville. She has worked with several international corporations and the US Air Force. Amy was drawn to pursue Urban Planning due to her love of European design principles which actively embrace the concepts of Sustainability, Alternative and Renewable Energies, and Green Urbanism. She is a research assistant for the Center for Sustainable Urban Neighborhoods (SUN). In her free time Amy enjoys playing Scrabble, cooking, and spending time hiking and camping. |
Nate holds a B.A. in Communications from Milligan College (2002) and is pursuing a Master's of Urban Planning from the University of Louisville. Prior to returning to school he worked as an Americorps Volunteer with America's Promise and Appalachia Habitat for Humanity. He is currently working as a graduate research assistant for the Center for Hazards Research and Policy Development. His academic interests include sustainable development, housing, hazards mitigation and land use planning. |

Karl Keeling is currently in his first year in the Master's of Urban Planning Program in addition to working full-time for Louisville Metro Planning and Design Services as a Planning Technician. After growing up on the edge of the urban core, Karl found that he had an affinity for all things urban, especially older neighborhoods and the homes that line their streets. A self-professed real estate development junkie, Karls wants not only to develop property, but to develop properly. In his spare time, Karl can be found riding one of his many bicycles around Louisville's streets on the local trails. |
Rita Fleming is in her first year working part-time towards the MUP degree. She has multiple nursing degrees from Murray State and Vanderbilt, and possesses an M.D. from the University of Louisville. Her specific interests include historic preservation, downtown redevelopment, and regional transportation issues. |
Mike Gardner is in his first year of the MUP program. Originally from Louisville, Mike received his Bachelor’s in Political Science from UofL in 2003. He is specializing in Housing and Community Development and is particularly interested in urban infill and affordable housing development. |
Steve Hosch is a full-time student in the joint Master of Urban Planning and Master of Public Administration program. He is primarily interested in strategies for the creation of workforce housing, the development and use of alternative sources of energy, and generally any initiatives that have the goal of enhancing the quality of life for people in communities. He joined the University of Louisville's Center for Hazards Research and Policy Development as a Graduate Research Assistant in September of 2007. When the schedule allows, Steve enjoys playing drums in local rock bands and piloting small (single-engine) airplanes. He returned to the University of Louisville after more than twenty years working as an account manager and photoengraver in the packaging and the specialty engraving industries. He has a B.A. in English. |
